This is a new replacement stone and the original old stone is buried behind this stone but on top of the remains.
During part of the time of Jacob's service with the 14th Iowa Infantry, his regiment was stationed at Camp Butler, Springfield Illinois. President Lincoln was assassinated in Washington DC in April 1865 and his body was brought back to Lincoln's home in Springfield for burial. The 14th Iowa Infantry was on hand to serve as escorts and guards while Lincoln's body lie in state at the Illinois Statehouse, for the President's funeral, and for his entombment in Springfield's cemetery.
