Note: William J. Murphy was appointed as sheriff of Pinal County in 1879, before Gila County was formed. On February 23, 1881, he was appointed by General John C. Fremont, Territorial Governor, to be the first sheriff of Gila County. This appointment was made over the vehement objections of a number of Globe residents who called for an election, rather than an appointment. On April 5, 1881, he was replaced by an elected sheriff.
