Died October 5, 1869 in Cochise County, Arizona

In 1857 Col Stone served with the 5th US Infantry in Utah and New Mexico. After his discharge he became a US Marshall and in 1867 was appointed a Collector of Customs and relocated in Tucson AZ. Stone was very popular and described by friends as being energetic and of strong character. In 1868 he and some associates developed the Apache Pass Mining Company. On October 5, 1868, Stone was a passenger on a stagecoach departing from Tuscon. In Apache Pass the stage was attacked by Apaches. Stone, the driver and the four soldier escort were all killed in the attack. A year after the attack Stone's remains were supposeldy moved to the Ft Bowie Post Cemetery for re-burial.
