In May 1869, he was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to the position of Assessor of Internal Revenue of the Fifth Collection District of Michigan. Mr. Dake served in this position until 1877 when he was appointed as Chief Deputy United States Marshal for the Eastern District of Michigan.
In 1878, Marshal Dake was reassigned to serve in the Arizona Territory. He retired from his position as U. S. Marshal in 1882 and decided to spend his retirement in Prescott.
