Son of Amazon and Mary Ann (Tyler) Howell who named him after the Civil War Confederate hero General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. He was also the brother-in-law of John Horton Slaughter, the former Texas Ranger, Cochise County Sheriff, Indian fighter, and rancher. He died of pneumonia just one day before his 26th birthday.
