He was born in Louisiana and moved to Texas where he fought Comanches and drove cattle herds with his brothers. He fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War and was a Texas Ranger before moving to New Mexico and then on to Arizona. In Arizona he became a rancher and sheriff of Cochise County where he was known as the "meanest good guy who ever lived." When Pancho Villa stole some of his horses he confronted Villa and returned with 20 gold pieces.
