"Loren Eugene ( Gene ) Fowler passed away on Thursday April 17, 2008 in Mesa, he was 77 years old. He was born 8-23-1930 in Corning, Arkansas to Oren Edger Fowler and Alice Brown Fowler. His father was a sharecropper and his mother died when he was only 5. He lived in Corning, Arkansas until 1943 when he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan. He married Margaret (Peggy ) Saxton, Sept. 3, 1949. Upon graduating from Ann Arbor High School he started work with the State Savings Bank as a collector. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and returned to Ann Arbor in September 1953. At the bank he soon progressed from a teller to other positions, such as head of the mortgage department and branch bank manager for several branches. He attended banking schools at the Universities of Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Notre Dame. He worked for the bank 44 and a half years and became Vice President and Cashier and Marketing director in 1967...When he retired from the National Bank of Detroit in 1993, several hundred friends, co-workers and civic leaders stood in line at a reception to wish him well. During his years in Ann Arbor he was active with the University of Michigan Ticket Department during football season. He was an avid lover of the Michigan Wolverines and anything Michigan. He loved to play golf and was a member of Ann Arbor Golf and Outing club for over 40 years where he shared many good days spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Michigan Club, the YMCA Men's Club, the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, the Ann Arbor Economic Council, the Michigan Banker's Association, the Catherine McCauley Health Council, the Washtenaw Economic Development Committee, the Wolverine Council, an executive board member of the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the downtown Kiwanis Club. He served as trustee of Rochester College, Cleary College advisor and as advisor to Washtenaw Community College. He also served on the Michigan Technology Council. He served as an Elder for the Ann Arbor Church of Christ for 25 years until he retired and started spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. In Arizona he served as deacon for the Sun Valley Church of Christ and he had a great love for his church family there. He was a gifted song leader and enjoyed leading the congregation in his favorite hymns. Though he was born in Arkansas and retired in Arizona , he had a great love for Ann Arbor which never diminished. He loved the memories of his many walks to the bank from his home on Maywood Street and the many memories of all the years spent with the bank and knowing so many people. He was a great "people "person. He never met a stranger. He lived by Christian principles from the day he put on his Lord in baptism in 1954 until the day of his death. The church and his family were his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Reva Zeilman, and by his brothers, Herman, Leamon, Clifford, and Gerald Fowler. He is survived by his wife Peggy, of 58 years, three sons, Bill and Carol of Abilene , Texas, Bob of Ann Arbor, Michigan, John and Beverly of Bridgewater, New Jersey, grandchildren Johnny Fowler and his wife Sherri, Jeff Fowler, Lauren Fowler, Lindy Fowler, Courtney Fowler, Cassidy Fowler and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday April 21, at Falconer Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM. Located at 251 W. Juniper Ave, Gilbert, AZ . Funeral Services will be Tuesday April 22 at 10AM at Sun Valley Church of Christ located at 1015 N Recker Rd, Gilbert, AZ. Interment will be at Mt. View Memorial Park in Mesa.
