Jesus (Chuy) V. Ortiz, 89, left this world peacefully in the arms of the Lord on June 29, 2009, after a short stay at Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson. Jesus was born Feb. 23, 1920 in Winkelman, and attended school there.

He entered the Armed Forces during World War II. Army Sergeant Ortiz served two years as a gun commander of a 90MM gun crew in the South Pacific, the Philippines, and Guadalcanal. After being honorably discharged, he and his brother Lawrence attended the American Barber College in Los Angeles. He returned to Arizona and began his lifelong career as the barber in Winkelman, which he continued up until about four years ago. He gave many first haircuts, and was known and loved by all.

Jesus was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with his son Harold, grandson Brad, and brother-in-law Richard Gamez. He also enjoyed many hands of poker with old friends.

Left behind in loving memory is his wife of 62 years, Lilia Ortiz of Winkelman; son, Harold (Diana) Ortiz of Aravaipa; daughter, Karen Ortiz of Tempe; grandson, Brad (Tiffany) Ortiz; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Trysten, and Blake of Kearny; granddaughter, Elissa Ortiz; great-granddaughter, Charlil Grace of Gilbert; sisters, Connie Verdugo of Mammoth and Vera Dorame of Mesa; and brother, Lawrence Ortiz of Mammoth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Delores Ortiz; brothers, Joe, Alfred, and Robert Ortiz; and sisters, Laura Padilla and Mary Ann Encinas.

Rosary and Mass will be July 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hayden. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson.
