Melvin's headstone is not there he died a week after these photos were taken. Here is a letter about him from Marlene Gardner his niece:
"On monday, August 6th, your great uncle Melvin Gardner...Grandpa Gardner's brother, passed away. Like his other siblings, he lived a long and wonderful life full of service and love. He was doing very well at the age of 95, still had a good mind and was getting around on his own when, on the 12th of July, he fell and broke his leg. From that day until the day he died he was switched back and forth to four different hospitals and finally a hospice. There was one complication after another. Pnuemonia is very common after a fall such as his and his case was no exception. In treating the pnuemonia, they found that he had cancer in one lung.
His funeral will be in Mesa on saturday the 11th, at the LDS Chapel one block from the Mesa Temple on 2nd Ave. The viewing will start at 8:00 a.m. and family prayer will be at 8:45. The funeral will be at 9:00 a.m. After the funeral and luncheon the body will be taken to Woodruff where there will be another short service before the burial.
I remember Uncle Melvin being a gentle man with a sweet spirit, always having a smile and a warm hug. He was one of those hard working part-time, full-time farmers that worked from before dawn until dust but always had time for his family and his church. He graduated from Flagstaff College with a master's degree in education and taught in Taylor, Woodruff, Lehi, and Holbrook. He played several musical instruments in dance bands and parties with his brother (Arthur), his sisters, and even his mother and father. I remember them many evenings by the fireplace playing for hours, any tune we could name. He served as a bishop for 13 years in Woodruff and was a temple worker for many years. I believe he was also a stake patriarch. But most of all, he was a loving uncle who had the capacity to love and be loved by all that knew him. We will miss him.
