John TEWKSBURY

Tewkswbury/Jacobs Gravesite Cemetery
Gila County,
Arizona

Died - Sept 1, 1887

Early in the morning of September 1, 1887, William Jacobs and John Tewksbury left the Tewksbury cabin to hunt for horses.

Remaining in the cabin were Lydia Tewksbury, John's sister, his brother Ed, and Lydia's twelve-year-old son, Thomas Shulte.

At about 8:30 in the morning a party from the Graham faction shot and killed John Tewksbury and either killed or wounded Jacobs.

Jacobs was dead, but his skull had been crushed from the blow of a large rock being dropped upon it.

Until about 4:00 in the afternoon, the Graham party fired shots near or into the cabin to keep the occupants inside. Lydia sent brother Ed to find help.

It took Lydia and Thomas three days to find the bodies in the rough terrain in which they were killed. They covered the bodies in an effort to keep them from being devoured by wild animals. The ground was much too rocky for the two of them to bury the bodies.

The bodies were lying in the September sun for 9 days before the Coroner's Inquest could be held. A shallow grave was dug by the jurors where the bodies were found and what little remains were left were buried.
